Your Utility Bill Has
A New Look

Heads up! This month’s utility bill will look a little different as we transition to a new printing process. Please contact Utility Billing with questions: 763.441.2310 or email utilitybilling@otsegomn.gov.

Otsego Utilities Fact:

The East Wastewater Treatment Facility has Solar Panels on the roof of the Biosolids Building. Since they have been installed, these panels have produced electricity that has the same environmental benefit as planting 2,641 trees!

Most Asked Question
this Week…

My water is colored/yellow what can I do?
The City of Otsego’s water originates from deep water aquifers, several hundred feet deep. Well water is typically high in dissolved minerals; iron is our most predominant mineral with orange color variations and soft flakey texture. Hydrant flushing, location of your home and what is happening around you could affect the water in your home. If you are on a Cul de sac, at the end of a water line, have construction going on near you, or if you have been on vacation or leave for the winter, all of these things could affect the color of your water.

The best way to remove the color is to do the following:

  • Run cold water for five minutes or until the water runs clean.
  •  If hot water is colored, run your hot water for five minutes or until water runs clear. If it does not clear up, you may need to service your hot water heater.  The interior of your water heater can deteriorate due to mineral buildup, leading to rust and sediment in the water heater. Follow your owner’s manual for flushing recommendations.
  • Replace whole home filters, water filters or iron filters if need be.

Fall Hydrant Flushing

West Side: October 16 - 31

The City flushes approximately 1,300 fire hydrants each April and October to keep water lines clean and the system running smoothly. During this process, residents may notice temporary water discoloration, pressure changes, or a stronger chlorine smell. These effects are caused by stirred-up minerals and are not a health concern, though they can affect taste or color.

If water appears discolored, run cold taps (like an outdoor spigot or tub faucet) for about 5 minutes until it clears. Avoid using hot water until the cold runs clear to prevent sediment from entering your water heater. Check your water before doing laundry, as discolored water can stain clothing. If stains occur, keep clothes damp until rewashing or use a rust/stain remover.
