History
Prairie Park sits on land rich with Otsego’s early history. The area was first settled in 1852, six years before Minnesota became a state, when pioneers from Maine and other New England states arrived seeking fertile land and new opportunities. Originally called Pleasant Grove—though some records list it as Pheasant Grove—the township was officially established and renamed Otsego in 1858. By then, the 400-acre townsite near today’s Nashua Avenue and 95th Street had a school, post office, ferry, sawmill, church, and hotel. Early settlers cleared the dense “Big Woods,” building log cabins from the very trees they felled and carving farms from the forest floor. The site where Prairie Park stands today reflects that pioneering spirit and remains a gathering place for the community more than 160 years later.
