History

Norin Landing takes its name from Elaine Melin Norin (1917–2003), a respected Otsego historian who lived on her family’s farmstead off Kadler Avenue. Her grandparents, Albert and Justina Melin, purchased the land in 1898, and it remained in the Melin–Norin family for more than a century, earning Century Farm status. Elaine was instrumental in preserving Otsego’s story through her writing and through her work with the Otsego Heritage Preservation Commission. After her death, the farm was sold and thoughtfully developed into the Norin Landing neighborhood, preserving roughly 33 acres of open space — including 20 acres along the Mississippi River — and creating a city park that now offers public access to a stretch of the river recognized as a world-class bass fishing area.
