History

In the early–mid 1900s, education in Otsego was delivered through a network of small rural schools organized by Wright County. Districts were created and adjusted as families petitioned for access, and their names were later revised in the 1950s. Most of these one-room or two-room schools closed through the 1940s and 1950s as students were consolidated into larger districts in Monticello and Elk River. The last to close was the Lily Pond School in 1955. Several former school buildings — including the Otsego School in the village and others like the Heuring, Richter, Greeninger, and Carron Schools — still stand today as private homes. School Knoll Park sits in the area once served by these rural districts, preserving the memory of a time when neighborhood schools were the center of daily life in Otsego.
