History

In 1855, Oliver Kelley and his brothers founded the town of Northwood on the west bank of the Mississippi River, complete with a hotel, store, school, and ferry service. However, the Panic of 1857 halted its growth, and the town was never completed. Across the river, Oliver Kelley's farm became a U.S. National Historic Landmark—the birthplace of the National Grange, America’s first nationwide farm organization dedicated to supporting and empowering rural communities.
